There has always been (and I suspect there will always be) a considerable amount of friction between people of faith and those who aren’t; between those who believe in Jesus and those who don’t. And there are two opposite and equally wrong approaches that Christians are adopting en masse to deal with it.

One is to remove friction altogether by capitulating, by simply going with the flow. The other is to shout back at those who oppose our faith, fighting fire with fire. Completely opposite. Completely wrong.

Daar was nog altyd, en ek vermoed daar sal altyd ‘n aansienlike mate van wrywing bestaan tussen mense van geloof en ongelowiges; tussen diegene wat in Jesus glo en diegene wat nie in Hom glo nie. En Christene gebruik twee teenoorgestelde en ewe verkeerde benaderings om hierdie mense te hanteer.

Een benadering is om te kapituleer, deur eenvoudig saam met die stroom te gaan om op hierdie wyse die wrywing heeltemal te vermy. Die ander benadering is om terug te baklei met diegene wat ons geloof teëstaan, deur hulle metodes en tegnieke te gebruik. Ook heeltemal verkeerd, nè?

Ek het nou die dag ‘n spotprent gesien van twee ouens wat na Jesus staan en kyk waar Hy aan die Kruis hang. Die een sê vir die ander: “Wat het Hy gesê wat almal so kwaad gemaak het?” Die ander ou antwoord: “Wees lief vir mekaar”. Waarop die eerste een geantwoord het: “O ek sien; dis die rede!”

En dit was wat gebeur het. Jesus het gesê: Wees lief vir God en wees lief vir mekaar! Wanneer jy dit uitleef, word jy gekruisig. Maar hoe tree jy in so ‘n konfronterende situasie op? Is daar sprake van liefde en vriendelikheid wanneer jy geloofswrywing ervaar?

Kolossense 4:5,6 Tree met wysheid op teenoor die mense wat nog buite die gemeente is. Maak die beste gebruik van elke geleentheid. Wat julle sê, moet altyd vriendelik wees en van goeie smaak getuig; en julle moet weet hoe julle elkeen behoort te antwoord.

Stel jou voor dat wanneer een land ‘n ambassadeur na ‘n ander land stuur en al wat die ambassadeur doen, is om met venynige en sarkastiese opmerkings voor ‘n dag te kom, omdat hy nie saamstem met wat die land doen nie. Dis nie effektiewe diplomasie nie, nè?!

God roep ons om as wyse ambassadeurs op te tree. As jy in Jesus glo, is jy ‘n ambassadeur van Christus. Tree dus soos een op… al weet jy hulle sal jou waarskynlik nog steeds kruisig.

Dit is God se Woord. Vars … vir jou … vandag.

ross. One says to the other, “What was it that He said that got everyone so upset?” The other guy answers, “Be kind to one another”. To which the first one replied, “Oh yeah, that’ll do it!”

And that was it, right? Love God, love one another – boom! Crucifixion. So where does that kindness come into the equation amidst this faith friction that we’re inevitably experiencing?

Colossians 4:5,6 Be wise in the way you act with those who are not believers. Use your time in the best way you can. When you talk, you should always be kind and wise. Then you will be able to answer everyone in the way you should.

Imagine if one country sends an ambassador to another and all the ambassador does is hurl vitriol at this second country because he or she disagrees with what they’re doing. Not very effective diplomacy, eh?!

What God’s calling us to here is ambassadorial wisdom. If you believe in Jesus, you’re an ambassador of Christ, so act like one … although, they may still crucify you.
